Generalized Hospitals: The Luke Luke & Laura Laura Story… just one more thing!
A collaborative project with Torsten Zenas Burns that premiered as an exhibition in September 2022 at The Tack Room in La Verne, CA. The print work in the exhibition evolved into an augmented reality project (see documentation below), and the video that shares its name with the title of the exhibition has both a looped exhibition version of 60 minutes and a highly altered theatrical release of 59 minutes that has premiered at the 2024 Chicago Underground Film Festival in a program titled Generalized Hospitals.
The exhibition included videos, sculptures, print, and jigsaw puzzle reliefs reframing elements of nostalgic popular culture into contemporary dialogue with soap operatic tropes, televisual humor, and fictional interspecies relationships. Scenes from daytime drama, 1970's children programming, gameshows, tv interviews, reimagined sequential art characters are re-contextualized to consider new potential cohabitating mutations to thrive in a changing environment. Transformation is unboxed, and memory solicited through easter eggs, lidar animations, appropriations, and original videos interweaving recognizable characters from television commingled with their new doubled variants. In just one more thing…., our forecasted performative rituals suggest ways that these characters merge human and non-human characteristics of past trauma into new bodies of possibility.
