Along the Perimeter installation at Saint Joseph's Art Society
Along the Perimeter, approximately 30-minute live video/sound performance or looped video installation
Originally a live cinema performance, Along the Perimeter, can also be recorded and exhibited as a two-channel installation comprised of synchronized HD video projected on 2 free standing rear projection screens with sound.
The performance is an live mix of an audio/visual score derived from an active camera feed and previous recordings made at the start of the pandemic lockdown around the periphery of my studio using a handful of media capturing devices from motion activated surveillance cameras to a camera that uses a microscopic lens. The work unfolds the possibilities of intersecting with the sublime in one’s very own backyard by engaging, revealing, and commingling the flora with the insects and creatures with whom we share the land. A reimagined performance of the glass harp as played with hearing aid feedback cupped within a variety of glasses heightens the works connections to sound and its integral part of the perceived environment. Cushioned within the environment of the garden, the images, gestures, and feedback harkens towards attempts to commune with both human and non-human entities found in the landscape. While the work is scored through hundreds of clips mostly tethered with audio from their original recordings, the exact combination and mix of the audio/visual materials are improvised through a network of software played live from a laptop. Towards the end of the performance a camera feed focuses on a live version of the glass harp described above that is layered into the imagery. No two performances are exactly alike.
Live performances can be recorded and then synchronized as two-channel standalone installations as was the case in its presentation for the Ann Arbor Film Festival.
